History: Kate Cushing is a reporter for the Daily Bugle and Peter Parker's reporting partner.
When Kate was 18, she watched her sister Tracy sink into depression, and ultimately abandon her family to join a cult. Kate felt powerless, but soon became a journalist so she could have power -- the power of the press.
She used to work on a tabloid newspaper in Florida, until her editor assigned her to do a story on Spider-Man. She traveled to New York and met Peter Parker. Young Parker was quite smitten with the beautiful reporter, while Kate found Peter to be a very intriguing fellow.
Although the assignment was just a simple interview with Spider-Man, it became quite an adventure for both Kate and Peter, because at the same time, a small amount of Plutonium was stolen from ESU and used to make an atomic bomb, which in turn, was stolen by a rich tycoon from LA. Kate had also been captured by the tycoon and Peter had to travel to LA to save her. An exhausted Spider-Man managed to defuse the bomb, which had been set on top of a large building in LA. He also managed to save Kate, but he couldn't do the interview.
She was soon introduced to Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson who was impressed with her resume. Kate reciprocated by grabbing his cigar out of his mouth and breaking it in half, asking him to "refrain from smoking these disgusting things" in her presence.
Later, Kate quit her job in Florida and decided to move to New York to work as a reporter for the Bugle. She is frequently paired with Peter due to their excellent teamwork.
