History: A Kree Sentry was defeated on Earth by The Fantastic Four and subsequently so was Ronan the Accuser. Astonished by these events, the Kree sent a starship to monitor Earth and gather information on its advancements in missile and space technology. On the way to Earth, Mar-Vell was ordered to take a small crew and make contact with the missing Grand General Devros on a Brood infested planet. Captain Mar-Vell and Una barely escaped a now Brood infected Devros and the Brood Queen. They were rescued by the Shiar guard led by Deathbird, and re-united with their ship bound for Earth.
Mar-Vell was given orders to infiltrate Earth by his commander, Colonel Yon-Rogg, who was jealous of both Mar-Vell’s reputation as a warrior and his relationship with the ship’s medic, Una. One day while Mar-Vell was returning to the ship to renew his supply of breathing potions, Yon-Rogg tried to assassinate him by “accidentally” firing the ship’s laser beams at him, but a small private plane came between the beams and Mar-Vell, and it was destroyed instead. Mar-Vell went to the aid of the plane, where he found the only occupant to be the now-deceased Dr. Walter Lawson, whom Yon-Rogg had just murdered--and who bore an astonishing resemblance to Mar-Vell himself. Lawson was an expert on missiles and robotics who had just been transferred to the nearby military base. Seeing this opportunity to infiltrate The Cape, Mar-Vell decided to assume Dr. Lawson's identity and pose as him. Yon-Rogg would continue trying to assassinate Mar-Vell, and activated a dormant Kree Sentry in the hope of that it would kill him. Mar-Vell defeated Sentry #459 in his Kree uniform, and during the battle, bystanders misunderstood the Kree soldier, thinking he had called himself Captain “Marvel." Thus a new super-hero was born.
Mar-Vell continued to live on Earth, both under the identity of Dr. Walter Lawson and as Captain Marvel. During his stay, he began to appreciate the human spirit and loyalty. As Captain Marvel, he also became close to a United States Air Force Colonel, Carol Danvers, who was falling for him whilst, ironically, investigating his alter ego Walter Lawson, whom she suspected of treason. Mar-Vell's and Carol’s closeness greatly troubled Una, who felt the man she loved was slipping away from her. Eventually, Una would fall victim to Yon-Rogg’s hatred towards Mar-Vell and pay with her life as she was shot in an attempt to save him. By this time Mar-Vell had been branded a traitor to the Kree due to his repeated refusal to harm humans. In his quest to save Una, Marvel took her away in a stolen rocket from The Cape. However she eventually succumbed to her injuries and died on board.
After an unknown time of helplessly wandering through space, Mar-Vell met a being named Zo who apparently granted him incredible new powers. However, Zo was actually an illusion created by Zarek and Ronan in the hope of fooling Mar-Vell into destroying the Kree home world of Kree-Lar and overthrowing the Supreme Intelligence ("Supremor"). Their plans failed because the Supreme Intelligence was already aware of Zarek's and Ronan's plans and rescued Mar-Vell from execution at Ronan's hands. Mar-Vell was rewarded for his bravery with a special uniform, and kept some of the powers given to him by Zo. The Supreme Intelligence, unfortunately for Mar-Vell, had not forgiven him for his loyalty to Earth, and it exiled Captain Mar-Vell to the Negative Zone, a "negative-matter" continuum alongside that of Earth. There he would remain trapped until he was able to lure Rick Jones to a pair of millennia-old "Nega-Bands" by using an apparition of Captain America. (Jones was attempting to replace James "Bucky" Barnes as the Captain's partner, and was unaware at the time that the Captain's greatest enemy, the Red Skull, had used a Cosmic Cube to cause himself and the Captain to switch bodies.) Once worn, the Nega-Bands could be used by Rick to exchange places with Captain Marvel and vice versa; they remained on Earth on the wrists of whichever of the two was on Earth at the time.
He would later clash with Yon-Rogg, which would give way to Carol becoming Miss Marvel, play a key role in the Kree/Skrull War's end...until it reignited some time later, but after fighting a mutant named Nitro, Mar-Vell was exposed to a nerve gas that caused him to develop the Blackened, the Kree term for cancer, and eventually died. His lover at the time of his passing, a Titan Eternal Elysius would impregnate herself with samples taken from MAr-Vell, which gave way to the births of Genis and Phyla-Vell, and his affair with Princess Anelle gave birth to Hulkling.
But Mar-Vell was not gone for good. Grandmaster summoned him once to fight for him, and recently...he just resurrected him to see if he could better motivate his allies. Seeing a vision of Carol Danvers in danger, Mar-Vell flew off to meet her.
Equipment: Nega-Bands: Kree "nega-bands" use energies of the Negative Zone and the wielder's own energies. Those who wear them are capable of interstellar flight and become resistant to many attacks and the micropressure of deep outer space as well as ceasing to require food, water, air or sleep. The bands, however, are not capable of distinguishing water from a proper atmosphere; therefore, a wielder of the Nega-Bands could still drown despite being protected from spatial micropressure. Such wearers are also granted super-human strength. The bands have considerable ability to manipulate, absorb and project various types of energy, except mystic energies, but to a lesser extent than that of the Quantum Bands.
Immunity To Cold, Radiation, Micro-Pressure, And Suffocation: Wearers of Kree nega-bands acquire such super-humanoid powers as described above; however, they can still be affected by gas-based attacks, as Mar-Vell himself was in conflict against Robert "Nitro" Hunter, in whose course he contracted the lung cancer that killed him.
Captain Mar-Vell's Kree Uniform: While serving in the Kree Space Fleet, Mar-Vell wore the green-trimmed sky blue Kree uniform that signified his rank as a captain. [21] Later, the uniform was modified, by the imaginary cosmic being Zo, to resist the rigors of spontaneous teleportation through space. Later still, the Supreme Intelligence honored him for his efforts to save it from destruction with a black-trimmed red uniform bearing gold decorations.
Powers: Originally, Captain Mar-Vell possessed no super-humanoid powers. However, the various Kree races had all evolved with higher strength levels than Earth humans to combat the heavier gravitations of their home worlds.
Kree Physiology: Owing to his Kree physiology, Captain Mar-Vell possessed the natural attributes of the Kree race; he possessed resistance to poison, toxins and disease (systemic antidote), and a higher natural strength level and more durable body than a human.
Super-Humanoid Strength: The shared super-normal, but not super-humanoid, strength level of the Kree races enables a Kree to lift (press) between 1 ton and 1.2 tons under optimal conditions, including Earth gravitation.
Super-Humanoid Durability: While this was never stated as an official capability, Captain Mar-Vell did take incredible blows from powerful heroes and villains alike, and proved to be capable of standing toe to toe with Thanos. This durability also extended itself to him being capable of surviving unprotected in the micropressure of deep outer space without having to breathe for an indefinite amount of time.
Super-Humanoid Speed: Mar-Vell was impressively fast even for a Kree, quick and agile enough to dodge bullets and laser fire, outpace a speeding missile and dodge laser fire with relative effort.
Super-Humanoid Agility: Mar-Vell's agility, balance, and body coordination were enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of the finest Earth athlete.
Super-Humanoid Reflexes: Mar-Vell's reflexes were beyond those of the finest human athlete, which made it possible for him to dodge gunfire, even at point-blank range, from multiple gunners at the same time.
Over the course of Mar-Vell's life he was, both artificially and cosmologically, augmented and evolved by a host of outside sources that all bolstered his natural Kree genetic structure. The first was by being empowered by cosmic entities, both the false entity called Zo and, later, the true entity named Eon. Subsequently, he was also empowered by such devices as the Psyche-Magnetron and the Nega-Bands.
The Casting Of Sensory Illusions: Zo bestowed upon Captain Mar-Vell the semi-telepathic ability to project highly convincing sensory illusions into the minds of any adversary he came across. The power had limits, however, as it only worked on the optics of organic beings; robotic agents like the Man-Slayer were immune to its effects.
Augmented Physiology: Zo had greatly enhanced Mar-Vell's condition beyond his initial regular limits, making him strong enough to crush boulders, resist heavy impacts, and move even faster than ever before. Under the influence of Eon, his bodily frame was augmented further still. With the aid of the Kree Nega-Bands, he was further empowered both physically and dynamistically.
Bolstered Strength: At Zo's temperance, Captain Mar-Vell's base strength level subsequently became sufficient for him to lift (press) at first 10 tons, later 15 tons; this enabled him to smash known almost-unbreakable Kree elements such as daxilium. Eventually, the maximum amount of weight that he was capable of lifting (pressing) was further bolstered, around 50 to 60 tons, and for short periods of time, he could augment his strength further still, but the actual limits to which he could extend his strength have never been clarified.
Bolstered Durability: Mar-Vell's tolerance for blunt trauma was also strengthened, to where he was able to widthstand a full force blast from Iron Man's repulsor rays or blasts from Ronan's universal weapon, and trade blows with the likes of the Man-Slayer while himself emerging unscathed. Eventually, he became resilient enough to resist the impact force of a Kree "Uni-Blaster," and he was even able to hold his own in combat against Namor McKenzie, the Sub-Mariner, for extended periods.
Bolstered Speed. Mar-Vell could fly at speeds ranging from faster than 7 miles per second while in a planetary atmosphere to light speed while traveling through space. He was fast enough to keep pace with Monica while in light form; he could also dodge laser fire, rapidly construct fortifications using his powers, and casually fly to the other end of the sun in seconds.
Flight: Mar-Vell also found that he could fly without the need of the rocket belt that had been part of his Kree uniform, having the ability to travel through the infinite void of space at "translight"/supra-luminal (faster-than-light) speeds unaided.
Cosmic Awareness: Captain Mar-Vell's most impressive power was his "Cosmic Awareness," which he received from Eon. This ability allowed him to know exactly what he needed to know at any moment. This could range from what his current location was to discovering an opponent´s weakness; upon acquiring this power, he first demonstrated it by realizing, not only that certain details of the special uniform with which the Supreme Intelligence had honored him for preventing its destruction (as described above) had been altered, but also that Eon had transformed the color of his previously silver-white hair to blond. This power alone made Captain Mar-Vell a force to be reckoned with, but its exact nature and scope have never been clearly defined. It might have been somewhat comparable to Spider-Man's "spider-sense" and to Mantis's awareness of psychic "vibrations," but its scope was far greater than either of those.
Absorption and Manipulation of Radiation/Energy: Dr. Benjamin Savannah's radiation treatment of Rick Jones had altered Mar-Vell's genetic structure in such a way, that not only could he absorb energy from outside sources, be they personal like the Nega-Bands or ambient such as cosmic sources, but also convert and manipulate it for various uses. He eventually came to rely on solar power rather than the bands for flight, and in flight, he would leave a glowing trail, resembling a star-field, behind him.
Nega-Band Based Energy Absorption. Mar-Vell also demonstrated the ability, drawn from the Nega-Bands, to absorb energy into himself without harm.
Simulated Telekinesis: He could manipulate his energies in such a way as to move people/objects about by focusing constructs around them.
Healing/Restoration: Captain Marvel would eventually learn that he could use solar/photo-ionic energy used to empower him as a means to accelerate his own recovery process. A skill initially utilized through use of his Nega-Bands, he came to realize he could heal himself through his natural ability to absorb and metabolize solar energy. Using the Nega-Bands, he could redistribute absorbed photon power to heal as well as reinvigorate others. This power would not, however, work on the lung cancer he contracted from the nerve gas he had proved unable to avoid breathing in during his fight against Robert "Nitro" Hunter.
Solar Energy Metabolics: Mar-Vell possessed the ability to metabolize solar energy and convert it for a variety of uses, including conversion of the light of the sun and stars into different forms of light and energy.
Flight: While he retained his ability to fly, when doing so using solar power rather than the Nega-Bands, Mar-Vell found that he would leave behind a glowing trail that resembled a star-field.
Star-Field: In certain ways Captain Marvel could utilize his star trail in a similar manner to that of Lightspeed of the Power Pack, in that he could carry others along with him while in flight.
Solar Sustenance (Starvation & Thirst): He can supplement his dietary needs with solar power.
Photon Energy Blasts: Captain Mar-Vell could project photon energy blasts that were powerful enough to destroy stars twice the size of Earth.
Energy-Enhanced Strike: Captain Mar-Vell was also able to channel the said energy behind his blows to increase their striking power, once employing this power to knock out the Super-Skrull with one punch.
Size-Shifting: After one occasion when he accidentally absorbed too much energy from a destroyed star, Captain Marvel found that he could unconditionally shift his size to monolithic heights. This can only happen under such conditions.
Virtual Invulnerability: Captain Marvel can trade blows with Thanos for an extended period of time and hold his own by channeling the Nega bands power into him.
Regenerative Healing Factor Amplification: He can burn up absorbed solar power to double his healing speed, but not power it to cure cancer or surpass other limits.
Minor Molecular Control: Mar-Vell demonstrated the ability to use absorbed energy to transform the regular clothes he wore in Earth disguise into his uniform, and vice versa.
Abilities: Possessed of extensive knowledge of the technologically advanced vehicles and devices of the Kree Empire, Captain Mar-Vell was considered the best soldier and warrior in the Kree Army, being highly trained and a capable hand-to-hand combatant, and as a tactician, he was often compared to the likes of Captain America in terms of ability. Being from a highly advanced alien civilization, Captain Mar-Vell also had extensive knowledge in highly advanced Kree technology; due to Mar-Vell's upbringing in an advanced alien culture in which intelligence was superior to that of humans. Mar-Vell was capable of matching the most advanced thinkers in the Marvel Universe, as he was known to make great calculations in seconds. On top of that, Mar-Vell was highly skilled in the fields of mathematics, robotics, and mechanics.
Weaknesses: He can contract diseases like the Blackened.
Trivia:
- Mar-Vell was named an Avenger Posthumously. But they would seem to be eager to welcome him in.
- He is eager to meet his kids.
- He is very concerned about Carol.
